Health Benefits of Coffee and Why You May Not be Able to Enjoy Them

Coffee has significant benefits for many people’s health, though some people are genetically predisposed to be more sensitive to caffeine found in coffee.

One of the genes responsible for caffeine metabolism is CYP1A2. Your variation of this gene helps determine whether you feel like a hot jittery mess after one cup of coffee, or can chug a liter before bed without missing a minute of sleep that night.

I land in the 45% of people known as “fast” caffeine metabolizers.

Regardless of how much we love our daily cup-o-jo (or 4 or 5…) caffeine intake should limited in people who are experiencing HPA axis dysfunction.

HPA stands for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, and this is a major pathway in our bodies responsible for a myriad of functions. You may be familiar with adrenals – and the term “adrenal fatigue” is a common way of saying HPA axis dysfunction.

Caffeine is known to interact with and up-regulate this pathway, increasing the amount of ACTH and corticosterones (stress hormones) in the system.

This is especially true with larger doses of caffeine, which is probably why we’re so jumpy after that 3rd cup of coffee.

If you have dysfunction in your HPA axis, it is best to avoid caffeine while you are working to solve the problem. Caffeine can also increase the damage to a leaky gut, which is why most protocols eliminate it from the diet.

If you are not sensitive to caffeine, have a perfectly functioning HPA axis, and your tight junctions are on point – enjoy coffee and all of the health benefits it has to offer!
